In healthcare, cybersecurity is a key component of a provider’s operational infrastructure. Hospitals, clinics, surgery centers, long-term living centers and many others in the healthcare industry have fallen victim in the past to ransomware attacks or data breaches. In our previous post, we looked at Training and Technology as a foundational part of any cybersecurity program. In this follow up, we look at Backup/Recovery and Cyber Insurance.

Backup and Recovery

There are still times when an incident may occur despite the right investments. When it happens, the backup and recovery capabilities for your organization can make all the difference. There are a variety of options at various levels of investment that can bring back your systems and data that can minimize the impact of an intrusion. While many organizations are utilizing backup to disk for speed and efficiency, in the case of ransomware attacks that infect and encrypt all data on a network, an air-gapped copy of backups, taken before the infection, may be the last good copy to restore your organization to function. Weighing all of the scenarios and options is an important part of a good recovery plan.

Cyber Insurance

Finally, cyber insurance is also an important consideration for each of us. Make sure you’re educated and informed on the options you have to provide for any expenses related to third party liability, or direct expenses related to recovery from an attack that are incurred operationally or directly related to resolving the incident itself (such as legal, forensic or credit monitoring services).

Especially during times of crisis, IT and security leaders need to plan and prepare to keep their organizations safe. Expanding your resources to proactively guard against malicious cyberattacks and keep patient data safe and secure, regardless of size, is always important, but especially so during times of crisis when some may try to exploit vulnerabilities.
